How to choose a diagnostic scanner for your workshop

Choose a workshop scanner by the cars you service and the jobs you do. Check full-system coverage for those makes, bi-directional tests, the service resets you use most, whether you need coding or online programming, support for DoIP and CAN FD on newer cars, and what software updates cost after the first year.

Start from the cars in your bays

List the makes and model years you see every week. A tool that is strong on Japanese and Korean cars may be weaker on recent European cars, and the reverse. Ask the supplier to check coverage for your top makes, not the total number of brands on the box.

Match the functions to your jobs

• Read and clear codes, live data every scanner does this on all systems.
• Bi-directional tests switch components on and off to prove a fault.
• Service resets oil service, brake pad, throttle, steering angle, battery registration.
• Coding set up replacement modules and options.
• Online programming load new software into modules; needs a stable power supply.

Check the communication protocols

Newer cars use DoIP and CAN FD. Make sure the tool and its VCI support them. If you plan to program with the carmakers' own software, look for J2534 pass-thru support, as on the Autel MS909 S2 or the THINKTOOL Master X2.

Think about the next two years
